4 Productivity Hacks for Hot Marketing

You start out the new year in high hopes.

You have a fine picture of marketing success in mind…

Then your confidence erodes as obstacles appear that weren’t in that picture.

If you ever find yourself in that situation, there are four cards you can play that will get you back on track. Maybe you may know them already, maybe not.

Articulated here, among other things by Jess Lee former CEO of Polyvore, a San Francisco startup acquired by Yahoo, I found them refreshing and powerful. Perhaps you will as well.

A quick summary follows below the video.

Here are the top 4 productivity hacks I took away from Jess’ talk:

1. Focus on just one thing and get really good at that. If you want to do other things at the same time, at most take on one pilot project on the side at a time. When you’ve got that wired, hire and train someone else to do it and report back to you. Rinse and repeat.

Doing that, Jess went from being a product developer to leading the company to a successful buyout as its CEO.

2. Look for grit when hiring. It’s not so much about where they are now as much as “distance traveled”. Somebody that came from a well off and supportive background might not have the grit as one who started with nothing.

Think Oprah, going from dirt poor to billionaire. Evaluate where did they come from and how far have they come to measure “grit”.

3. Remember the runway. Don’t forget you’ve got to get your enterprise off the ground before the money ends. Complacency is your enemy. Keep moving fast to avoid disaster.

4. Get used to and even go for that “sick” feeling when things don’t always go right… It means you’re learning and growing.
